The SCHULE Cultural Center was founded in July 2022 in the building of a former German school in the Orlické Mountains, which had long served as a place for education, community gatherings, and later as the village’s cultural center. We decided to build on the potential of this site and establish a center focused on contemporary cultural and educational activities. The center’s program connects local social and cultural themes with the work of contemporary artists active on both the Czech and international scenes. Our aim is to create a space for vibrant contemporary culture and community—both physically and online. To this end, we organize discussions, exhibitions, workshops, performances, and short-term residencies, inviting specialists in the field as well as both interested and wider audiences.

Art, education, and social issues are the three main pillars on which we build our curatorial work. We seek to use an artistic approach as a way of seeing the world, with an emphasis on critical thinking and reflection on both local and global themes. Our motivation lies in fostering dialogue and collectively searching for new perspectives and approaches toward a sustainable future. An important part of our mission is building a stable audience and collaborating with partner organizations in the region that focus on cultural, social, and environmental fields.

Program

The center’s program connects local social and cultural themes with the work of contemporary artists active on both the Czech and international scenes. It is conceived as a meeting place for theorists, professionals, artists, and both specialist and general audiences. The program is structured into thematic blocks that respond to current social developments. In 2026, these include: Construction and Deconstruction; Language and Image; One Set (intergenerational overlap); Invasive Species; The Workshop of Humanity, or The Transformation of School Matters; and Sculptures in the Landscape – Coordinates of Presence (contemporary sculpture in landscape and public space). Each theme is accompanied by an exhibition, lectures, discussions, and workshops bringing together artists, experts, interest groups, and the wider public. Exhibition blocks alternate with community events reflecting current local issues presented within a broader context. We collaborate on the program with invited guests and partner organizations. The program is further complemented by an artist residency, a summer workshop week for children, and a Summer School for teachers.
